The Lady Owls split their home double-header this past weekend, falling 3-0 against Louisiana-Lafayette before dominating Rutgers 9-1.On Saturday, the Lady Owls faced Louisiana Lafayette’s Ragin’ Cajuns. Jen Musillo, a senior, was off to a great start, pitching six scoreless innings. Designated-hitter Ambar Jones and left fielder Lauren Crandall scored early for the Owls, but it wasn’t enough to secure the victory as they lost 3-2. Louisiana-Lafayette scored three runs in the last inning courtesy of Cajun’s first baseman Lacy Bertucci. Bertucci had two hits and drove in three runs for the come from behind win. “This team is very explosive,” said Joan Joyce, FAU Softball’s head coach. Despite the loss, Joyce was happy with the strong pitching performance by Musillo, who had nine strikeouts against the 15th nationally ranked team. “Jen really did a nice job for us,” Joyce said. “And [that] gave us a chance to win.” Unfortunately, the pitching wasn’t enough as the team ended their six-game winning streak. The Owls were looking to even the score against Louisiana-Lafayette in the second game. Both teams were tied in the first inning, but the Cajuns exploded, outscoring the Owls 6-1 and eventually winning 7-2. Pitcher Holly Tankersley and right fielder Desi Chatman each had a home run, and combined for five hits. It wasn’t enough, though, to keep the Cajuns down as they swept the Owls in opening day action of conference play. FAU sophomore pitcher Kathryn Stauffer would suffer her first lost of the season, going 4-1. “I was hoping to keep the ball in the ball park tonight,” Joyce said, after the second loss to the Cajuns. On Sunday, the Owls would face Louisiana-Lafayette again, along with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The Owls took on Ragin’Cajun’s Brittany Cuevas. Cuevas struck out 11 Owl batters, and posted a 3-0 shutout. “Their pitching was a lot stronger,” Joyce said. The Owls, looking to resurrect themselves after being swept by Louisiana-Lafayette, faced the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The Owls were led by left fielder Lauren Crandall, and third baseman Amy Bukovich. Crandall, a junior, had four hits and scored two runs while Bukovich, a sophomore, contributed with two hits and drove in two runs. The Lady Owls defeated the Scarlet Knights 9-1, and snapped back from a three game losing streak. “This game was a bounce back performance,” Bukovich said. “It was a big confidence booster,” Crandall added. “We came out and hit the ball well, and everyone stepped up getting the job done,” senior second baseman Mandie Fishback said. The Lady Owls are currently 14-10. This weekend they host the Parents Weekend Tournament.
