While most FAU students were “burying the burrow in red” this weekend in support of the Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams, the Softball team earned the right to play in the Miken Invitational tournament final.
FAU hosted the event that brought University of Miami, University of Central Florida and South Carolina to Boca with the hopes of defeating the lady Owls.
The ladies got of to a good start on Friday with a 10-0 domination over UCF and 8-2 victory over Miami.
A Standout starting pitching performance by Jen Musillo, who struck out 9 players in game one of the tournament, propelled the team to victory. That was followed by another dominating performance by Meghan Doonan, who allowed only 5 hits, returning to her 2005 level of excellence.
Saturday started off well with a 5-0 shutout of Pittsburg that was aided by great pitching from Kathry Stauffer and a homerun from Musillo. The night took a negative turn against the Gamecocks of USC. The Owls allowed a 2-0 lead to slip away in an extra inning’s loss to USC.
Despite the loss, FAU went to the Championship game on Sunday. Those pesky Gamecocks were waiting for the Owls in the Championship, and early on it looked like the lady Owl’s were ready for them.
Freshman outfielder Hailey Broyles gave the Owl’s an early 1-0 lead with a RBI single that drove in Becky Brandies. However, that would be the only run for the Owls, who were defeated 3-1 in the Championship game by USC.
