BOCA RATON, FL (November 2, 2006) – The UWC meeting, on October 20th, was held on the Treasure Coast Campus and chaired by Kirk Murray, Student Body President. Members of all the campuses unanimously passed a Bill authored by Geno Roefaro, Chair of Agencies & Programs, and Rakibur Joarder, Boca Raton Senate Speaker; to hold an event called the “Keys To Success Seminar” (K2SS), coming on February 20th, 2007 to the Boca Raton Campus. The general concept of the event is to bring together students, alumni, faculty and staff, and respected professionals to participate in a motivational leadership seminar.
Emphasizing the importance of relationship building as a key to success is a major goal of the event. A networking reception will follow directly after the seminar; which will be divided into sections based upon student’s career interests. This unique event has a universal focus to serve to all students in their specific career interests and focuses on success in general.
We look forward to having distinguished and successful FAU Alumni take an active roll in the participation of the entire event. We are excited to hear from an exclusive panel of well-known FAU Alumni to speak in front of hundreds possibly thousands of students.
By hosting this program Student Government will provide benefits to FAU students, Alumni, Faculty and Staff, and the local community. After the K2SS, SGA looks forward to seeing an overall increase of the level of professionalism as a whole at FAU; and to potentially spark other new professional events on the student and university level. Optimistically, students will walk away not only inspired, but with built relationships to lead to new jobs, internships and other career opportunities.
Faculty and staff will have an opportunity to access a large network of professionals in their field, and around the courses they teach. Ultimately SGA seeks to increase the level of participation of external professionals on campus, and specifically inside the classrooms.
FAU students will benefit in a wide range of areas, they will have the opportunity to learn new skills and recognize the value of networking; especially the importance of developing a network before their college graduation. Students will be more aware of the amount of distinguished and successful alumni that are a part of FAU; and this event will increase the opportunity to develop relationships between them. It provides students with a unique opportunity to meet respected professionals and community leaders that most would not have a chance too; and to have more students proud to be part of FAU. Furthermore, the “Keys To Success Seminar” will provide 50% of all funds generated from the event directly back to worthy FAU students, from its soon to be formed “SGA’s Keys To Success Scholarship” fund. This event will be free for FAU students, faculty and staff.
At the same meeting, SGA officials met to review and reward the FAU Student Government Scholarships. It was a joint effort with the Financial Department. The Scholarships are open to all FAU students and were distributed on a need and merit base. There were four successful recipients, two of which were incoming freshmen and two transfer students (junior standing). The candidates demonstrated leadership roles from their respected High Schools and Colleges. Each scholarship was for the amount of $1000.
Moreover, Homecoming Family day on October 20th, at the MacArthur Campus, was a success with over 200 people which was a good turnout for their Honors College.
Additionally, Treasure Coast students had a blast at their Homecoming at the Eagle Marsh on Saturday, October 21, 2006. Most of the students arrived at around 7:00PM and started to bond with fellow students, while marveling over the “lights, camera, action” themed decorations adorned all around the beautiful country club. About an hour later, a dynamite dinner was served, accommodating vegetarian tastes, as well. Not much longer, the lights were out and our FAU students hit the dance floor! The DJ even “cut a rug” with them on the dance floor as they all danced the electric slide. Just about every student arrived wearing a great costume, which definitely added to the fun! All in all, there was a great turnout for FAU students for their homecoming and it was definitely a memorable night for all!
On a further note, on October 23rd, Boca Governor’s Administrative Cabinet (GAC) participated on the Homecoming Golf Cart Parade. Their theme was “Wild West”.
SGA officials dressed up and helped out to make the Family Fest a great event. President Frank T. Brogan,
Student Affairs, Housing and many others joined the Homecoming Parade as well. It was a great opportunity to gather families, alumni, faculty and off course FAU students. There were live performances provided by the FAU Dance Team, Cheerleaders and the Marching Band which added up to the grand bonfire finale by the Housing Lawn. The Treasure Coast Homecoming Court made an appearance and provided Halloween goodies to the students. The GAC had a great turnout of students the following day when they put together the “Haunted Breezeway”. They had free candy and the first 100 students got to decorate their own pumpkins.
FAU Diversity week is coming up soon on November 13-16. SGA will be holding events at the different campuses. Get involved!!!
