Summer Update #6

What Happened: Capt. Carl “Chuck” Aurin, part of FAU’s police force since 1992, resigned in March amid allegations that he had on-duty sex with a student and pornographic images and e-mails on his department-issued cell phone and two office computers. The discovery was made after Aurin turned in his cell phone, patrol car and keys to his office after being resigned from his position as head of criminal investigations on complaints of possible ethics violations. Among other sexually explicit materials found was a video in a locked file cabinet of Aurin engaging in sex with a student, FAU Police Chief Bill Ferrell said.

What’s New: The police department installed software on laptops to monitor for sexually explicit e-mails and Web sites, one of many preventative measures taken, Ferrell said. Ferrell also explained the agency’s code of ethics to the department’s 42 sworn officers. While the university has no policies against fraternization between staff members, President Frank Brogan said relationships between employees and their bosses are prohibited.
