The Men’s Soccer Team struggled out of the gate. Starting their season on the road against Kentucky, they dropped their first three games before returning back to Boca Raton.
Upon returning home they seemed to have turned their luck around. Their home opener against Mercer was a rough one. The teams combined for a total of 31 fouls. 11 players were carded that night and one was even ejected. The battle raged on the field and looked like it was going to go into overtime with a score even at zero.
Then, in the 64th minute of play, Mercer’s goalie, David Bird, mis-played the ball and FAU sophomore Shire Standes was right there to put the ball into the net. The Owls were able to hold steady for the remaining 26 minutes awarding them their first victory of the year.
Fresh off their victory from two days before, the Owls were ready to take on their next opponent, the University of Binghamton Bearcats.
Although nowhere near as physical as the game against Mercer, both teams battled it out on the pitch. The two teams seemed evenly matched for most of the game, but Binghamton was able to get some nasty shots at FAU goalie Philip Lamarre in the second half of play. Lammare was able to stop all five assaults from the Bearcat offense and kept the game tied at zero at the end of regulation.
Four minutes into overtime, FAU pushed deep into Bearcat territory. Senior Ran Poliker, with a beautiful bicycle kick, crossed the ball, which allowed sophomore Javier Carillo to head it past Bearcat goalie Jason Stenta. Just like that it was over and the FAU Men’s Soccer team brought their season from 0-3 to 2-3.
