The idea behind the campus cleanup during Greek Week, according to FAU Freshman Amada Clare, is “Greeks giving back to the community.”
Greek Week is a weeklong event that includes food and activities (according to the advertising poster) for all Greeks and anyone wishing to join a fraternity or sorority. The campus cleanup is a mandatory event that requires at least five members from each of the mainstream fraternities and sororities to attend.
Crystal Coggins, a freshman from the Theta Phi Alpha Sorority, says that it gets the word out among Greeks. “The campus needs to clean. [Sororities] are not just about getting drunk,” said Coggins. The cleanup happens during every Greek week, and only lasts a couple of hours, but it makes an impression on the people involved. “It’s a good opportunity to bring Greek unity while cleaning the campus,” said Mark Call, a pledge for the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
In addition to the campus cleanup, Greek week this year consisted of a barbeque, a skit night, an alcohol awareness night, a talent show, and a step show. The final event was the Greek Awards Banquet. These events are open to all students and they offer a chance for people not involved in the Greek community to meet other Greeks and see if they are interested in joining.
Chris Doran, a freshman from the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, said that he participated in the cleanup last semester. “It was good, it helped. [But] there should be more weekends where we have cleanups.” Most of the people there were freshman and sophomores who wanted to give back to the FAU community.
Molly Lesselbaum, a sophomore, added that she “just wanted to come for my sisters.”
