Jeffrey Buller has been named the new dean of the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College on the Jupiter campus. The honors college is FAU’s most academically selective college and the majority of student have SAT scores of 1200 or higher and weighted GPA’s of at least 3.62, according to FAU’s website. “I am delighted that someone of Jeff’s caliber has chosen to be part of FAU’s family,” said John Pritchett, FAU’s provost. “We look forward to his leadership as we seek to extend honors education throughout the university.”Buller endured an extensive eight-month interview process, and was selected out of 90 candidates. He said that the interview process was set up with all the candidates meeting with many different constituencies, as well as interacting with the adversary group. Pritchett also said that what made this interview process difficult was that all these people had a different set of perspectives.Buller’s previous work experience consisted of three administrative jobs, which contained all the skills needed to perform this job. As a previous honors director, regional dean of a mid-size university and dean of a mid-size liberal arts college, Buller possesses expertise leadership ability.Buller is transferring from Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia, where he was the dean and vice president of academic affairs. He was also the chief academic officer, responsible for 32 undergraduate and three graduate programs. Prior to this, he was also acting dean at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. Buller will start his term as dean at FAU next month.Buller said he plans on continuing the emphasis that has already been made on promoting and expanding the honors college. The college plans on giving privileged students more of the course listings they want and need. “It is wisest to never, as an outsider, come in and make changes,” Buller said. The honors college houses 35 faculty members and over 350 students, and takes a different approach to the standardized college progression. The students in this college have broader options and may take courses out of order. “This Honors College is a private Liberal Arts College experience, within a comprehensive university,” Buller said. “It gives students the best of both worlds.”
