Every three minutes a person in the United States is diagnosed with Breast Cancer. For two Broward teenagers,Elyssa Goodman and Hilary Sheinbaum, this fact is just too staggering to handle. Rather than sitting back and ignoring the problem, Elyssa and Hilary, (both 17 year old students at Coral Glades High School), decided to do to something about it: they conceived and created3 Minutes Battle of the Bands, a concert to raise money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. The inspiration for 3 Minutes came from Sheinbaum’s participation in Relay for Life, an 18-hour walk-a-thon/fund-raiser for cancer research. “Last year I took part in the Relay,” Sheinbaum said. “I met with a lot of survivors and listened to the amazing stories they had to tell, and I was really inspired by them.”The daylong event, held on April 1 at Revolution in Fort Lauderdale, will feature nine local bands performing head-to-head to see who will be crowned the 3 Minutes champion. Breaking Tides, Aphelion (comprised of three FAU students), The Mercy League, Merge, Red Sky South, Dear Your Name, The Beatniks, A Kiss to Betray, and Mason Road, (all of whom were chosen in an initial application process), will vie for top honors. The audience will receive ballots as they enter and vote on which band had the best performance. Goodman and Sheinbaum hope to fill the 1,900-person patio at Revolution, but they also hope to shed a bit more light on the devastating disease.”We wanted to make a difference in a way other than just donating a bunch of money,” says Goodman. “Its something very close to my heart; both my godmother and grandmother passed away from breast cancer.” So come out and show your support for homegrown local music and an important cause. The battle begins at 1 p.m. and rages on until 8 p.m. – all ages are welcome. Tickets are $10 at the door. For more information visit www.jointherevolution.net or call (954) 727-0950.
