The Treasure Coast Student Government Association has something new for its students: a Book Swap. Why did they come up with this idea? As SGA member Raysa Jewell points out, “The campus bookstore is expensive. They rarely have used books. It is tough to get books there because they don’t always get them when classes start, their buy back is only one or two days with little or no advertisement, and the rate given is very little.” Although the SGA does not take responsibility for the exchange of money or books, the organization does facilitate the buying, selling, trading, and even lending of books for students through a manual in their office. This manual contains forms, which an interested student may fill out, containing information on what kind of books they have available and whether they want to sell, trade or lend. If a student is looking for a book to buy, all they have to do is peruse through the manual and ‘hook up’ with other students through the information given. The Book Swap is working to lessen the financial load on participants. Student and SGA Senate Speaker Helen Marshall claims, “Although I am not in the office during peak times, I can look through the manual to see what is available. The book swap has saved me at least $50 a book, and I have used it numerous times.” Treasure Coast students: drop by your SGA office in room CO128 soon to take advantage of this cost-saving program.
