Long-Distance Relationships

When asking most people whether long distance relationship ever work out, they will almost immediately give responses such as “No way” or “I don’t think so”.

Why is it people are quick to make negative remarks about long distance relationships? They either speak from experience-bad experience that is, or simply reproduce what they hear from others.

Talking from personal experience myself, I must admit that making a long distance relationship work involves more than strong feelings, not to underestimate their importance to the recipe. I believe that compromise is one of the basics to maintaining such a relationship.

This is the most complicated thing to achieve, particularly on the college age group level. Most of us are ready to take on the world, possibly bring upon positive change to reality and therefore not willing to make way for much compromise in our lives; especially with a person who we don’t know we will end up with.

If we have a partner that holds us back, or whose flaws go against our basic values, chances are an up close and personal relationship won’t work, much less a long distance relationship.

What happens when phone calls become few and far between, when doubts start floating in and out of one’s mind, or when you get lonely? Truth is it all comes with the long distance relationship territory. The involved parties must be willing to compromise the ideals of a conventional personal relationship or else it simply won’t work. Sure, feelings may be strong and intentions may be good but it is proven that they are not sufficient for the success of the long distance recipe.

Those who believe that eyes not seen are soon forgotten are most likely to fail at a long distance relationship. Not to say that they are a hopeless case, after all “impossibility” in working it out may be considered one more stereotype to add to the long list we humans have created.

In the long run, if that’s what you’re in for, it’s all about taking the right approach and having the will to achieve your very own successful recipe.
