You see them lurking around campus, hiding behind trees and signs, roving the parking lots, looking for that one mistake by their hapless prey; the student with no parking decal.
I am joking a little with the comments above, but I do certainly think that there is a problem here on campus with some of the officers (one motorcycle cop in particular whose name I will not divulge).
A short comment on my position with regard to the fine men and women who wear badges and serve as police officers; they are needed and usually they are fair in their dealings with the public and keep the peace when needed.
I am from New York City, the Upper West Side to be more specific, where there was the typical civil uproar over Rudy Giuliani allocating more of the city’s spending to the police budget and the recruiting of thousands into the rank and file. Some people made fools out of themselves by picketing city hall with placards depicting the image of Giuliani touting the Hitleresk toothbrush mustache and swastikas around his head (why were they not at their jobs on a Tuesday afternoon is what I’ve always asked myself?).
Personally I loved the police who made my city safe by being “Tough on crime.” They reduced the overall crime rate by 57%, murder by 65%, and literally saving New York City, once infamous around the world for its dangerous streets and subways. Since Giuliani’s time, and now into Bloomberg’s time at the helm, NYC has been recognized by the F.B.I. as one of the Safest Large Cities in the United States. Basically, my point is that I love cops and love what they are capable of achieving under the right leadership and circumstances.
Towards the end of last semester I was turning onto FAU Blvd. from 20th St. around 7:45 a.m., I was heading to the Physical Science building in my old busted out 1989 Jeep. I was in second gear when I was pulled over by the above mentioned motorcycle cop who was hiding with his radar behind an informational direction sign. He said I was going 35 mph. I pled my case about my gears, but he was having no part of it. I took my ticket along with the $130 punishment and dealt with it in my own way, whining about it to everyone I knew.
That was when I started hearing about all the young women drivers who are getting away with driving like Michael Schumacher at the Monaco Grand Prix. A very close friend of mine, pulled over by the very same motorcycle officer, was let off for driving 45 mph with no registration. She only received a warning!
I know another young lady who had the same experience, only she was driving 40 mph and let free. I think it is an outrage. Yes, we all hear about cops letting the fairer sex go free while men get the book thrown at us.
I am not screaming sexism, but I am screaming profanities! I think it is time for the police here on campus to get off their proverbial high horses and start acting like the real officers they claim to be rather than getting off on chasing skateboarders and issuing wimpy tickets as if they are bringing down the Gambino Crime Family.
