FAU volleyball improves

While Hurricane Jeanne was visiting the east coast of Florida, the FAU women’s volleyball team visited North Carolina for the University of North Carolina Greensboro Tournament. Kelly Paiva and Iana Andonova were named to the all-tournament team after they helped FAU win three of its four games at the tournament.

Andonova had 70 kills in the weekend’s games, while Paiva finished with 60 kills, 42 digs, 15 blocks and three service aces. The Owls lost their first match of the tournament to Memphis 3-1, and then went on a three-match winning streak, defeating Morgan State in three games, UNC-Ashville in five games and host school UNC Greensboro in three games.

FAU’s next two matches are on the road at Gardner-Webb on Friday, and then at Campbell on Saturday.

FAU’s volleyball team defeated the University of South Florida for the first time in school history back on Sept. 22, 2004. FAU improved its record to six wins and only one loss, while USF fell to 2-7. FAU has now won six straight games.

Kelly Paiva earned 22 kills, which is a career-high for the Brazilian native. A-Sun player-of-the-week Iana Andonova finished the match with 20 kills, and senior Cayse Kaveyn finished with 13 kills. Senior Lindsey Bell led all players in the match with 18 digs.
