As incoming students you are all probably wondering what you can do to have a good time. Sure you could go to the local bars and watch others drink, or show off your stylin’ dance moves. A better idea would be to take advantage of what Campus Recreation has to offer.
For starters, no matter which campus you are attending, FAU has a weight room at each of them. From free weights to machine weights, FAU has what it takes to burn off what ever you eat now that mommy isn’t cooking for you.
On the Boca campus there is a weight room and a cardio room for every student to take advantage of for no cost. Get there early because the rooms can fill up and with limited space a crowded weight room makes for a long work out.
Along with the machines for fitness, yoga classes are offered but you would need to check either the FAU web site or the campus rec. departments themselves for places and times. The same applies for the weight room but you can count on it being open pretty early and closing after all classes have been completed.
The Boca campus also has a pool which students can use, but hours of operation also vary with the swimming team’s schedule and the need for a lifeguard on duty.
If pumping iron isn’t your forte but you still have that competitive spirit there are two options for you at the Boca campus.
The first being intramural sports. Intramural sports range from flag football to foosball. Some of the leagues run throughout the semester, while some, like football and three-on-three basketball, are tournaments that may last only a weekend.
If you are interested in really getting your head in the game, campus rec. is offering dodge ball for the first time in the fall. They are trying to capitalize on the success of Ben Stiller’s recent movie and the fact that freshman, as well as other college students, really are just looking to stimulate brain cells.
A lot of participants enter these leagues on already formed teams that you can sign up on in dorms or any clubs you may be a part of. If you ‘re not affiliated with a team there are usually two or three teams that are formed by campus rec.
If you need more competition, Boca campus rec. also puts together a team to participate in events against the University of Miami, FIU, Nova, and three other colleges from the area. They only take fifteen players on a first come first serve basis but they want the best. Miami has been the perennial champion so show your school spirit and beat those Canes.
Other avenues to display your aggression or lack there of is to join one of FAU’s numerous sports clubs. These are designed either for those who just want to have fun and play the sport amongst themselves, or those who actually participate in tournaments or intercollegiate leagues.
Teams that compete against other schools are the Surf, Ice Hockey, Roller Hockey, and men’s and women’s Rugby clubs. All of these clubs allow anyone to join but they may limit the rosters for competition.
Fine, maybe all of you are not interested in getting all sweaty playing sports, but that does not mean campus rec. is not for you.
If you want to be your own adventurer campus rec. can help you out. Anything you need to go camping is at your disposal for a small fee. Tents, coolers, and sleeping bags are available but on a first come first serve basis. They are usually taken when school is on break but they are available whenever you want them.
You don’t have to be your own plan for adventure weekends though. Campus rec. sets up adventure trips throughout the semesters for students to go on. The most notable trips are: snorkeling and kayaking in Key Largo, and a ski trip to Steam Boat Springs, Colorado.
This is just a small overview of what FAU offers the bored college student to pick up their spirits. For more information, you can call the campus rec. department on the campus you attend or go into the gymnasium at the Boca campus where fliers and staff can help pick the event you want to participate in.
