Have you ever been in a situation in which you needed good legal advice? If so, Student Government will soon be offering free legal services for students, available at all FAU campuses. Students with questions regarding issues such as renters’ contracts, traffic violations, taxes or marriage will be able to make consultation appointments with a managing attorney who will be working 20 hours per week on campuses. The attorney will be available to address students about their options, and give referrals to other full-time law services if further litigation is needed.
“The coordinating attorney who will be managing this program is an FAU alum who has strong ties, and wants to support students,” said Associate Director of Student Affairs Terry Mena. “This service is not legal representation, but advice by someone who is working in the interest of the students.”
Funding for the program was approved Jan. 23, and SG hopes that students do take advantage of the free services. Mena explained that SG organized the service in response to students’ requests.
“Many students have stopped by asking if there are any attorneys available,” Mena said.
While there is no set date as to when the program will be available, Student Body President Ancel Pratt said that SG is working to start within the next month.
“We wanted to implement a service to help FAU students, which is always the goal of the Student Government,” Pratt said.
