A blind human superhero fights for justice on the streets of Hell’s Kitchen in Daredevil, the newest action blockbuster to hit theatres.
Ben Affleck plays Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer whose dark past drives him to take the law into his own hands. At night, he becomes a red leather-clad “man without fear” whose other senses enable him to tackle New York City’s toughest villains.
The story begins with a boy growing up. His father (David Keith) is a boxer in Hell’s Kitchen. When bullies harass young Matt Murdock, his father tells him never to give up on a fight. When he finds his father working for the mob, Matt manages to run away, but is splashed by toxic chemical waste. As a result, he is permanently blinded, but his other four senses increase to superhuman proportions.
After his father is murdered, Matt Murdock decides he will “seek justice one way or another.” His other senses compensate for his loss of vision, and his hearing is so strong that it gives off a radar-like signal, enabling him to sense shadows and figures. This proves to be especially effective in the rain.
Daredevil also stars Michael Clarke Duncan of The Green Mile, who plays the head crime mogul, Kingpin. His mentally disturbed hit man, Bullseye (Colin Farrell), delivers a menacing yet comical performance. He darts sharp objects at human targets as he exclaims in an Irish brogue, “I never miss.”
Jennifer Garner plays Electra, Ben Affleck’s romantic lead. She is a woman from a rich crime family who also seeks revenge and justice for her father’s killer. She molds into a Catwoman-like character in black leather and serves as a strong counterpoint to the quick and lithe daredevil.
I recommend Daredevil for anyone looking for an action-packed movie with a human superhero and comedic and dramatic elements.
