Midnight Mayhem kicks off the FAU Basketball season

No points were scored during Midnight Mayhem, even though the FAU Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams officially began their 2002-03′ seasons on Friday, Oct. 11, at 11:30 p.m. in the FAU gymnasium. The event coincided with nationwide Midnight Madness, which traditionally signals the beginning of the college basketball season.

Midnight Mayhem was hosted by DJ Irie and Jammin’ Derrick B. from 99 Jamz (99.1 FM).

FAU’s cheer and dance teams performed a couple times, trying to rile up the spectators, and then the men’s and women’s teams were introduced. It was the first time that Owl fans were able to see the new additions to the teams.

The women’s basketball team added four new players: Shontavia Williams and Sharia Young, both two freshmen guards, and Jennifer Olson and Trineca McCleod, both juniors that play forward/center.

The men’s team added three forwards and two guards. Junior Wesley Edwards, Sophomore Jimmy Bishop, and Freshman Amadou Fall are the forwards, and Sophomore Drew Skeeter and Junior Chris Thomas are the Owls’ two new guards.

After the introductions, the teams competed against each other in a three-point shootout. Junior guard Julie Goad represented the women’s team and Senior center Nick Neumann represented the men’s team. Although Goad and Neumann were tied after time expired, they were both given thirty additional seconds to shoot. Ultimately, Goad came out on top.

It was encouraging for both men’s head coach Sidney Green and women’s head coach Chancellor Dugan that nearly 1,000 fans showed up for “Midnight Mayhem.”

Before the player introductions, both coaches challenged fans to continue to support the Owls throughout the season. Green and Dugan are hoping for continued success this year for both teams, which are coming off landmark years.

The men’s team won their first ever Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, consequently receiving their first ever NCAA Tournament berth. The women’s team came within one point of winning the Atlantic Sun Championship.

FAU’s first home game will be an exhibition game against Lynn University on November 9 at 7:00 pm.
