Going into the Sept. 11 match versus Florida International, the FAU women’s soccer team had a record of 0-17 against the Panthers since the program’s inception in 1991.
Rack one up for the Lady Owls.
Led by the senior from Miami Trina Maso de Moya’s hat trick, Florida Atlantic dominated FIU 4-0 in Miami. Late in the first half, freshman Julie Ferguson wove her way through the FIU defense and found an open Maso de Moya, who fired in her first goal to give the Owls a 1-0 lead.
About three minutes later, the two connected again, and Maso de Moya’s point-blank shot passed the Panthers goalie, and Florida Atlantic extended its lead to two.
Early in the second half, FAU was awarded a penalty kick after a Florida International player was called for a hand ball. Maso de Moya tallied her third goal of the match. The goal set the tone for the second half.
The Lady Owls secured their result with 18 minutes to play. Danielle Castro launched a corner kick into the goalie box, and Lauren Lucena headed the ball into the back of the net, making it a 4-0 game.
The defensive unit of Autumn Baur, Tamea Wimmer, Danielle Castro, and Krista Fine kept the Panthers off-balance all night, allowing only four shots on goalie Molly Keating.
Florida Atlantic won for the first time in 18 attempts. Maso de Moya’s is the fifth athlete in FAU’s history to ever score a hat trick. The last one to come from a Lady Owl was two years ago, when fellow teammate Lisanne Peart, who is out for the season with a torn ACL, scored three goals on Oct. 14, 2000.
Maso de Moya now leads the Lady Owls in points with six goals, while Ferguson recorded her team-high third and fourth assists.
FAU plays its next game against top-ranked Texas A&M in the Texas A&M Tournament in Texas on Sept. 20. The Owls’ next home match will be Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. when they host conference opponent Belmont on the Boca Raton campus.
