Prestigious fellowship for FAU VP

The American Association has selected Dr. Larry Lemanski, vice president for research at Florida Atlantic University, as a Fellow for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

æ

Dr. Lemanski, who joined FAU last July from Texas A&M University, was one of only 288 scientists named to this prestigious rank. He was honored for his distinguished contributions to the study of embryonic heart development and molecular biological mechanisms underlying cardiac nonfunctional mutations, as well as for his overall efforts in advancing science and fostering applications in science that are deemed scientifically and socially distinguished.

æ

Dr. Lemanski has published numerous research articles, many in prestigious journals, including Science, and has been an invited speaker at various international symposia throughout the world. In addition, he has been awarded significant funding to conduct his research through research grants from a variety of federal, state and private sources. New fellows were presented with an official certificate and a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin in February at the Fellows forum during the 2002 MAS Annual Meeting in Boston.

æ

The tradition of AAAS fellow distinction began in 1874. Founded in 1848, AAAS represents the world’s largest federation of scientists and works to advance science for human well being through its projects, programs and publications. With more than 138,000 members and 275 affiliated societies, AAAS conducts many programs in the areas of science policy, science education and international scientific cooperation.
