From New York City to San Francisco, in it’s fifth year “Cabaret” is still one of the hottest tickets on Broadway. Sexy and intelligent, the play’s script is as progressive as one would expect. Starting June 28th, FAU will put on their own production of this story.
The rehearsals are impressive to say the least. The theater department has worked hard, and it’s certainly paid off. With a larger budget for a more elaborate set, one might actually mistake this show for the actual Broadway production. The acting is impeccable and the cast’s vocals are even better.
The story takes place in early-1930’s Berlin and the script revolves around the Kit Kat Club, a burlesque nightclub. The characters explore risquí© sexual activities in a time before the sexual revolution through actions of bisexuality and homosexuality. In the time period of Pre-Nazi invasion this script boasts sex, drugs, and over the top decadence without any concern for social marginalization.
The master of ceremonies (Emcee), played by Brendan Grubb, leads you scene by scene, inviting you to enjoy the party as he sings “bleibe, reste, stay” in “Wilkommen,” the opening number that is sung in German, French and English. Grubb’s fabulous take on this charismatic character brings modern life to this classic story. FAU’s rendition of “Cabaret” features many other noteworthy actors and actresses. Marisa Sillner portrays Sally Bowles, a British woman working in the Kit Kat Club who has an addiction to men. Marisa interacts with others on the stage like a pro and her vocals are just as fabulous.
The cast as a whole appears more than prepared for the reputation that they will have to keep up. This show is fantastic for almost any viewer, as it is as entertaining and exciting as it is sexy and edgy. This show is highly recommended.
