13 people from Florida Atlantic University went for the first time to participate to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Regional Student Conference at Tallahassee, April 4-6, 2002. They participated to the Regional Concrete Canoe Competition for the first time. Since the fall 2001, they had been preparing that competition, by fund raising, designing the canoe, building it, preparing a display, and practicing to paddle. They were ready, they went to Tallahassee with D.I.F. (the name of the canoe, for “Damned It Floats”, that is what they said the first time they did tests of the concrete and they saw it floating) a 21 feet long canoe built in concrete, its weight was 150 pounds. It was an unforgettable experience, they did great, they had the 10th rank up to 19 universities coming from all the Southeast region of the United States, which is very good for a first participation. FAU will participate to the next ASCE Regional Student Conference, with a new canoe, and ready to win.
