College is a place where people come to get an education and learn more about who they are. Along the way, students may run into particular problems that might sidetrack their learning and personal experience.
One of the biggest personal enigmas that both college women and men face is that of eating disorders.
Though eating disorders are commonly associated with women, it is found that men suffer from them as well. The media directs most of their attention to eating disorders found in women, which leaves men with little or no information on how they obtain the disorder.
Yes, we all know that the media’s main money-hungry target is young women, but has anyone realized that young men are equally affected by colorful images of buff men in skin tight designer jeans? Men who have eating disorders usually do not seek help because they think eating disorders are feminine disorders, mainly because that is what the media puts out there.
This should not be the case. Men who suffer from an eating disorder should try to seek help and not feel ashamed to realize that there is a problem. More information on eating disorders affecting college men should be distributed and until that happens, they are left in the dark.
