FAU police arrested Ryan Beauchamp, a junior transfer student, this week for having a gun on campus.

Police Chief Charles Lowe said they found the weapon after Beauchamp, an electrical engineering major, had ammunition shipped to his on-campus apartment. They were alerted to the situation after the mailroom attendant in the University Village Apartments received a box that said "9 mm ammunition" on the side.

But they were not concerned about Beauchamp's intent.

"Guns on campus are a hot topic, but this was a different situation because of how it came about," said Lowe.

Beauchamp said he didn’t mean any harm, and that the ammunition was to pay back a friend.

“We go to the gun range all the time. Ammunition is expensive and hard to find, and I just wanted to pay them back for the ammo that I’d used in the past,” he said.

Beauchamp was arrested on a weapons possession charge and later released on Thursday with no bail.

FAU police said the investigation is still open, and that Beauchamp will face student disciplinary charges on top of criminal charges.

17:12 and 17:07. This is an interesting debate, it remains to be seen if the State Attorney's Office will accept the felony charges presented by FAU Police or offer a plea agreement to the lesser misdemeanor charges.
The University will most certainly expel Mr. Beauchamp regardless of the SAO's decision. However, a felony conviction will in essence ruin Mr. Beauchamp's future, while the misdemeanor charge will present fewer challenges later in life.

No, pursuant to Florida State Statutes, there are places where even CCF/CCW licensees cannot carry them, and a postsecondary school (university) is one of them... which is in FSS 790. Sadly, he really screwed himself, regardless of what I think. This is going to go on his records and not look good.

Incorrect on 17:10 - 790.115 does not apply to concealed weapons holders. If you have a CWP you would be guilty of carrying in a place of nuisance under 790.06, a second-degree misdemeanor.

Hello police state. I suppose it makes it easier on the criminals, knowing there are no guns around. I'd suggest Ryan take his money and his electrical engineering talent out of the state.

James, you're absolutely correct. Only FAU Police and other law enforcement officers conducting official business on campus may be armed. Anyone else in possession of a firearm on campus commits a felony under Florida state law 790.115.
A concealed weapons permit is irrelevant in this case.

He didn't have a concealed weapons permit and even if he did, I'm pretty sure the only people allowed to have guns on campus are university police.

Isn't that legal as long as he had a concealed weapons permit?

He's a good kid. He really didnt mean to cause anyone to panic. I know Ryan very well, and he wouldn't hurt a fly. Good luck Ryan! I hope things turn around for you!
