After dropping its season opener to the Cincinnati Bearcats, FAU bounced back by shutting out the Bearcats 3-0 in a quick, two-hour-and-15-minute game at FAU Stadium on Saturday.

On the mound for the Owls was junior right-handed pitcher Mike Gipson, who threw seven impressive innings. He issued only two hits and one walk, with four strikeouts. FAU only allowed three hits overall.

“I felt real good today,” said Gipson. “I threw a lot of fastballs today, getting low in the corner, and I stuck with it the rest of the game.”

Junior right fielder Andy Mee came in to relieve Gipson in the eighth inning. Mee pitched only one inning but surrendered no hits, gave up one walk and had a strikeout. Junior right-handed pitcher Glen Troyanowski closed the game.

Cincinnati’s starter, right-handed pitcher Tyler Smith, struggled, and lasted only four innings. He allowed six hits and the three runs.

The Owls’ runs came early. With bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning, junior first baseman Dan Scheffler took a sacrifice out at first for an RBI, bringing in sophomore Mike Albaladejo.

The next two scores came in the bottom of the second. The first run came from freshman third baseman Chase Vergason, who crossed the plate on designated hitter Sean Bukovich’s fly ball.

Smith then served a wild pitch, allowing outfielder Anthony Mesa to run home from third base to make it 3-0 in favor of FAU.

“This was exactly what we needed,” said FAU head coach John McCormack. “This gives us a good feeling going into tomorrow.”

FAU concludes the series against Cincinnati on Sunday, Feb. 21.
