Florida Atlantic baseball’s 3-0 start to the season came to a halt this past weekend, as the team won one out of three games versus Indiana University.

The Owls (4-1-1) dropped the first game on Friday night 8-4, but were able to bounce back Saturday, defeating the Hoosiers (3-3-1) 6-2.

FAU and Indiana were unable to settle their tie-breaker on Sunday, with the game being called after a 6-6 tie through 11 innings, due to Indiana’s traveling schedule.

Sophomore Tyler Frank went 9-for-14 for the weekend.

Here’s a recap of each game:

Game 1:

The Hoosiers took a 2-0 lead early in the first when junior Laren Eustace and sophomore Luke Miller both scored, but the Owls were able to cut the lead to one in the home half on a no-doubt-about-it home run off the bat of senior first baseman Esteban Puerta, his third of the year.

However the Hoosiers scored the next five runs — two in the third, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth — to stave off the possibility of an FAU comeback.

The remainder of the Owls scoring all came via the home run. Senior Stephen Kerr bent a pitch from foul to fair, hitting the left-field pole in the sixth. And with two outs in the ninth, Frank crushed an offering to left-center to score the game’s final two runs.

Frank and Kerr led the Owls with two hits apiece, and FAU outhit Indiana on the night, 10-8.

Senior Sean Labsan also made his first appearance on the mound this season, giving up an eighth-inning run.

Freshman pitcher Andrew Jones made his FAU debut on the mount and recorded a perfect 1-2-3 ninth.

FAU pitching struck out nine Hoosiers, led by starter Alex House’s six in five innings.

Game 2:

The Owls took the lead when senior third baseman Austin Langham singled through the left side, allowing Frank to score.

Indiana then scored twice in the third inning, to take the lead.

Frank would score again, tying the game at two a piece, then the first collegiate hit by freshman catcher Pedro Pages turned out to be a solo home run to rightfield, breaking the tie in the fifth and pushing the Owls ahead for good. They added another score in that same frame on a bases-loaded walk to Kerr and pushed across insurance runs in the sixth and eighth.

FAUs pitching was led by starting pitcher Jake Miednik. Frank finished the day 5-for-5.

Game 3:

Indiana, which was down to its last strike in the eighth inning, trailing 4-3, scored three runs to gain its first lead of the afternoon at 6-4. However, the Owls clawed back with a run in the eighth on a fielder’s choice, and freshman outfielder Gary Mattis came through with a clutch leadoff home run to left field in the ninth to even things up and send the game into extras.

FAU had runners on in each of the extra innings, but was unable to come away with the series-taking win. In the 10th, Hoosiers’ reliever Cameron Beauchamp walked the bases loaded, but with two down, Kerr was tagged out attempting a steal of home.

In the final frame, Frank singled up the middle with one out, but was stranded at first after the next two hitters struck out and flew out to enact the game stoppage.

Frank was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, and is hitting .613 on the season through six games.

Kerr reached base four times, on a double, a single and two walks. His double came in the first inning to score both Frank and Eric Rivera, giving the Owls an early 2-0 lead.

The Owls will travel to face Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at 6:30 p.m.
