Quarterback Rusty Smith becomes first FAU player drafted into NFL
Rusty Smith was sitting in his Jacksonville home watching the NFL Draft with his family when he received a phone call from a strange area code. The Tennessee Titans were just about to go on the clock, and Smith’s heart began to race. He knew this was his moment.
Just days after posting double-digit runs in consecutive wins against Boston College, the Owls baseball team found themselves in the midst of another high-scoring affair against University of Pittsburgh, and FAU needed a big comeback to improve to 6-4 on the season.
When FAU was knocked out of the first round of the Sun Belt Conference’s postseason tournament by an inferior opponent on March 6, the bitterness of defeat was prevalent among the players, especially guard Ray Taylor, whose disappointment led to him being helped off the court by coaches. While that feeling won’t likely subside anytime soon, the Owls should still look back at the 2009-2010 season as a successful one.
FAU finished the regular season at 14-14, and while the Lady Owls posted the most wins they have ever had since joining the Sun Belt Conference in 2006, the promise of an entire starting lineup of seniors failed to hold true.

Poor shooting ends FAU’s chances of winning final home game
The Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raiders (19-12) overwhelmed FAU (14-15) both offensively and defensively to drop the Owls to eighth place in the Sun Belt Conference on Saturday, Feb. 27, at FAU Arena.
The Lady Owls looked as if they were bound for a repeat of last year’s upset of perennial Sun Belt powerhouse Middle Tennessee State in their regular season finale at FAU Arena on Saturday, Feb. 27. But future WNBA star Alicia Taylor and the Blue Raiders proved to be too much in an 88-71 victory over the Owls.
Sloppy play ends FAU rally
The Owls (14-14) attempted a comeback but failed to complete it against the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers (18-12) on Thursday, Feb. 25, ending their hopes of claiming first place in the Sun Belt Conference’s East Division.
The Lady Owls came up just short in a hard-fought battle, as they could not get a stop in the final moments of the 80-74 loss to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Wednesday, Feb. 24, at The Burrow on the Boca campus.
Owls bounce back from season-opening loss with win on Saturday
After dropping its season opener to the Cincinnati Bearcats, FAU bounced back by shutting out the Bearcats 3-0 in a quick, two-hour-and-15-minute game at FAU Stadium on Saturday.
The Lady Owls lost both games of their season-opening doubleheader on Feb. 19 at the FAU Softball Stadium in the FAU Kickoff Classic, falling to Kentucky and Maryland by the same score of 2-1.
FAU rally falls short in 5-3 loss
FAU opened its season against the Cincinnati Bearcats on Friday, Feb. 19, at FAU Stadium in Boca, and despite a late rally effort, the Owls were defeated 5-3.
The FAU Owls (14-12, 10-5) led rival FIU Golden Panthers (7-22, 4-12) by as many as 12 points in their conference match on Feb. 18, but the Owls had to watch a last-second shot go wide to claim a victory, which tied them for first place in the Sun Belt Conference’s East Division.
Owls pull off 76-72 win over the Ragin’ Cajuns
After a pair of road game losses, the Owls returned home to The Burrow to face conference foe the Ragin’ Cajuns of University of Louisiana-Lafayette. The Owls responded to their two-game skid by putting on a show in a 76-72 Sun Belt Conference victory.
Lady Owls reach milestones in 84-75 victory
The Lady Owls celebrated a night full of milestones on Wednesday, Feb. 10, as they defeated the Ragin’ Cajuns of University of Louisiana-Lafayette 84-75 in The Burrow.
